WhatsApp Tally integration: Tally's own feature, an order app, or a custom build?

Tally's built-in WhatsApp sends invoices out; reading customers' WhatsApp orders into Tally needs an order app or a custom build. How to tell which one your business needs.

The short answer

If you search for "Tally WhatsApp integration", you will find three very different things sold under the same name:

  1. Tally's own WhatsApp feature, which sends documents out of Tally to your customers.
  2. Ready-made order apps, which read orders customers send on WhatsApp and turn them into Tally sales orders.
  3. A custom build, made around exactly how your business takes orders today.

They solve different problems. Most of the confusion comes from treating them as the same thing.

Option 1: Tally's built-in WhatsApp

From TallyPrime Release 4.0, Tally can send documents straight to your parties on WhatsApp: sales and purchase invoices, payment and receipt vouchers, order vouchers, outstanding bills and reminder letters. You can send them by hand, or set a voucher type to go out automatically after you save it.

It runs through Tally's WhatsApp partner, Interakt. You need a valid Tally software subscription (TSS) and a registered WhatsApp Business number, and your Tally partner handles the sign-up. (Tally's help pages cover the full setup.)

Good for: sending invoices and payment reminders without downloading PDFs and attaching them by hand.

What it doesn't do: Tally's help pages describe it as a way to send documents. They don't describe it reading the orders your customers send you. Someone still has to read each WhatsApp order and type it into Tally.

Option 2: Ready-made order apps

A growing set of products, mostly aimed at distributors and wholesalers, work in the other direction. A retailer sends an order on WhatsApp, and the app matches products, applies that retailer's price, and prepares a sales order for Tally.

Good for: businesses whose ordering is fairly standard and who want to start quickly with a monthly fee instead of a project.

Things to check before you sign up:

  • Which number customers order on. These tools usually connect to an official WhatsApp Business number. If your customers currently order in groups or on a personal number, ask what has to change on their side.
  • Whether your schemes fit. Case-to-piece conversion, "buy 10 get 1" schemes that scale with carton size, per-customer pricing and GST splits are where generic tools struggle. Test them with your messiest real orders, not the demo.
  • Who approves before Tally. Make sure a person can check an order before it is written into your books.

Option 3: A custom build

This is what I built for a B2B FMCG distributor in Ahmedabad (the full story is here). Orders keep arriving exactly as before. AI reads each message, fixed rules work out the bill including every scheme, a person approves it, and the sale order is written into Tally.

Good for: businesses with intricate pricing or schemes, ordering habits customers won't change, or a need for checks that a packaged product doesn't offer.

The trade-off: it costs more upfront than a subscription, and someone has to look after it as your rules change.

How to choose

  • Orders are fine, but sending invoices and reminders is the chore: start with Tally's built-in WhatsApp.
  • Standard products and prices, and you want something running this month: try a ready-made order app.
  • Your schemes and pricing live in someone's head, and mistakes are expensive: a custom build.

The two directions also combine well. Plenty of businesses will want Tally's own feature to send invoices, plus an app or custom build to read orders.

Questions to ask any vendor, including me

  • Show me my three messiest real orders going through it, end to end.
  • Where does a person check the order before it reaches Tally?
  • What happens when a customer orders something that isn't in the catalogue?
  • What changes for my customers?
  • Who fixes it when my pricing or schemes change?

Questions people ask

Can TallyPrime read orders from WhatsApp?

Tally's built-in WhatsApp feature, available from TallyPrime Release 4.0, is for sending documents such as invoices, vouchers and reminders to your parties. Turning incoming WhatsApp orders into Tally sales orders needs a separate order app or a custom integration.

What do I need to use TallyPrime's WhatsApp feature?

A valid Tally software subscription (TSS) and a WhatsApp Business number registered through Tally's partner Interakt. Your Tally partner handles the sign-up.

Should I buy an order app or get a custom build?

If your products and prices are fairly standard, a ready-made order app is quicker and cheaper to start. If your schemes and pricing are intricate or mistakes are expensive, a custom build fits better, at a higher upfront cost.
